A Day in the Life of a Service Driver: More Than Just Driving

A Day in the Life of a Service Driver:

It’s more than just driving

As an Initial Washroom Hygiene service driver for Rentokil Initial, your role is far more than just driving a vehicle. This is a critical hygiene and customer service position focussed on people, service and reliability.

What does the service driver role entail?

While driving is one part of the role, other priorities for our frontline service colleagues are being the face of Initial Washroom Hygiene and representing our business as they deliver a range of core washroom and mat services. These may include replenishing and maintaining hygiene products such as air fresheners and feminine hygiene bins, in a hygienic, compliant, and professional manner.

Here’s what some members of our essential frontline service team have to say.

Linda Tyler from the Edinburgh branch describes her day-to-day role as,

“Visiting customers, servicing all products,  and cleaning and adding bio fresh to sanitary bins to make them clean and fresh."

Michael Maclean mentions that his role involves,

"Starting with vehicle checks, then driving safely to my customers, to carry out washroom services,"

Delivering customer service excellence

Our service drivers have customer service excellence and professionalism at their heart, and along with all Rentokil Initial colleagues, we expect them to follow our defined customer service behaviours, which are represented by SCORE (Sustainability, Care, Ownership, Results, Expertise).

Let’s hear from Linda Tyler again,

"I am the face of Initial and I love keeping my customers happy,"

John Moore, a fellow washroom service driver, comments,

“Customer service  is really important to me; it's my top priority to keep my customers happy“

Craig Thomson says,

"Customer Service is the most important part of my role. I have built up good customer relationships - this shows in the TrustPilot reviews I receive.”

A typical day on the road?

As the face of our service businesses, it is their responsibility to build a strong relationship with the customers on their routes.

This varied role includes:

  • Preparing the van, checking schedules and routes, to ensure greater efficiency
  • Visiting customers across a set territory
  • Managing timings and routes efficiently, and taking any changes and disruptions into account

Opportunities and Career Growth?

There are opportunities for career progression in Rentokil Initial roles, and that of an Initial Washroom Hygiene service driver is no exception, with a range of development and training courses available.

Many of our frontline colleagues have already benefitted from these programmes, like Jack Snell.  He began his Rentokil Initial career as a service driver and, after completing his ADP (Aspiring Development Programme), he was successfully promoted to a Field Account Manager position.  This is just one of the many opportunities for progression offered for those who wish to use the service driver role as a starting point for their career aspirations.

Why could this be the perfect role for you?

The service driver role is not just about driving a vehicle from one place to another; it is about providing a high standard of service to customers. The job involves interacting with and delivering expert services to a wide range of customers, so if you’re looking for a customer-facing job with an opportunity for progression, this could be the role for you!

Linda Tyler - “I like the security and flexibility of the role - I have been here 22 years in November. I enjoy meeting new customers and retaining the customers we have.”

Micheal Maclean - “I am happy when I’ve completed my day's work knowing that I have made a difference!”

John Moore - “I like the flexibility aspect of the role and the self-management. Keeping all my customers happy, I also like the opportunity to earn extra money with the Together Bonus.”

Craig Thomson - “I also do the electrical work and enjoy challenging myself with that.”

Drew Morgan - “I like the flexibility- I currently work a 4 day week so get a long weekend every weekend, and it helps with childcare on a Monday. So it suits my family life. I also love seeing all my regular customers”
